【Spring in Jinan】Jinan Through Foreign Eyes: An Immersive Journey into TCM

Mugwort sachets exuding medicinal aroma, freshly baked herbal mooncakes still steaming, and herbal powder transformed into pills by swaying bamboo trays... Recently, Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine international students from five countries gathered at the Bian Que Cultural Theme Park in Changqing, Jinan. They immersed themselves in the aroma-filled TCM culture market, experiencing ancient healing techniques firsthand and gaining insights into the wisdom of traditional medicine. Centered on the culture of Bian Que, this event promoted the integration of traditional Chinese medicine into daily life through diverse interactive formats. International students gained a deep appreciation for the unique charm of traditional Chinese medicine through exploring, learning, tasting, and experiencing.
What happens when traditional TCM meets modern creativity? At the market stalls, Astragalus and Codonopsis jujube paste mooncakes, millet lotus seed osmanthus five-nut mooncakes, donkey-hide gelatin yogurt, and Poria cocos health tea ingeniously incorporated herbal ingredients into snacks. Based on the concept of "medicinal food homology," these treats preserved traditional flavors while adding health benefits, drawing long queues of eager tasters. At another stall, "TCM earrings" made with herbs like Poria cocos and hawthorn became a favorite among young women for their unique blend of style and wellness. Paired with intangible cultural heritage items like Changqing vegetarian buns and customized herbal teas, the Mid-Autumn Festival atmosphere at the stalls was nothing short of delightful.

在义诊体验区,来自法国的ALONZIQUENTIN(中文名字:林决明)亲手体验了膏药制作方法,并厚涂贴于背部。
"The black medicinal paste is amazing! My shoulder used to ache, but after applying it, I felt a soothing warmth and finally slept well that night," exclaimed ALONZI QUENTIN from France at the free medical consultation zone. He personally tried making the paste and applied a thick layer to his back. The black medicinal paste works by balancing yin and yang, promoting blood circulation, and relieving muscle tension. Professional practitioners offered free consultations, and queues formed at experience stations for massage, gua sha, cupping, and moxibustion. The students curiously experienced moxibustion, with doctors patiently explaining its benefits. AMROUCHE ANIA from Algeria marveled, "What impressed me most was cupping. It seems simple but regulates the whole body. TCM's precision is astounding!" Many locals also shared their post-moxibustion and cupping experiences with the students, fostering cross-cultural exchanges through TCM practices.

俄罗斯的YAKOVLEVNIKITA(中文名字:尼基塔)开心地说道。
"TCM feels magical. I made a sachet, tried moxibustion, and even tasted honeysuckle—a bit bitter, but the doctor said it reduces internal heat," said YAKOVLEV NIKITA from Russia happily. The event, themed "tourism + culture," allowed the students to appreciate Jinan's scenery while connecting TCM's history with modern life. They not only learned about Bian Que as the originator of TCM but also grasped the health wisdom of "preventive treatment" through market interactions. GAN TUNG ZEN from Malaysia encountered Bian Que in a scenario drama, engaging in a "cross-time dialogue" that showcased TCM’s evolution from traditional clay pot decoctions to modern innovations.

来自摩洛哥的SOUHAILCHAIMAA(中文名字:陈曼)在山东已经生活了3年,她感觉山东人民很热情。
SOUHAIL CHAIMAA from Morocco, who has lived in Shandong for three years, praised the locals’ warmth. As she identified herbs like mugwort and clove with doctors and carefully filled them into sachets, she immersed herself in the fragrant wisdom of "wearing sachets for blessings and health." KHAMER HIND from Algeria, having visited Daming Lake, Baotu Spring, and Shangxin Street in Jinan, exclaimed, "Jinan is truly beautiful." After exploring the TCM cultural market, she expressed a deeper understanding of TCM’s concept of "balancing yin and yang."
